Sharing a room with your baby | What you should not do

The safest place for your baby is in a separate crib or Moses basket in the same room as you for the first 6 months, even during the day.

A large study of data from across Europe found that the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome was significantly reduced when the infant slept in the same room, but not in the same bed, as their parents.

  • The safest place for your baby during the first six months is in a separate crib or Moses basket in the same room as you.
  • The risk of SIDS is lower when babies sleep in a separate bed in the same room as their parents.

Never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby

Sleeping on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby is one of the riskiest situations for them.

Studies have shown that sharing a couch or chair with a baby while you're both sleeping is associated with an extremely high risk of SIDS. A study found that around a sixth of infants in England and Wales who died from SIDS were found sleeping with an adult on a sofa.

Be careful not to accidentally fall asleep with your baby on a couch. If you think you might fall asleep, put the baby down somewhere safe to sleep.

If you're breastfeeding, ask your partner to stay with you, to breastfeed in another position where you're sure you won't fall asleep, or to feed the baby somewhere else.
